RUTH E. CARTER MASTERCLASS
Year:
2026
I participated in a remote design program hosted by Ruth E. Carter and Adidas through PLC Detroit, an HBCU-focused institution specializing in design centered career education. Throughout the program, I learned directly from Mrs. Carter about the importance of storytelling, collaboration, historical research, and excellence in design. As the most Oscar-nominated Black woman in history, known for her work on Black Panther, films by Spike Lee, and Sinners, she provided invaluable insight into the costume design industry. As our final project, we developed an original character, created 2–3 costume sketches, and crafted a detailed backstory that informed our design choices, demonstrating how wardrobe can bring a character's narrative to life.
